Commute Options

If you life within a few miles of your office or favorite stores, you can save money and improve your health by using your feet.  Even if you don’t live close, you can combine a walking trip with riding the bus. Walking daily is one of the best things you can do for your health!

Bicycling can be a great alternative to driving alone to work or replacing car trips to the store or a friend’s house.  It provides you flexibility and is a great way to incorporate some healthy exercise into your day. Though some people may bicycle as far as 20 miles, most people who use their bicycle for trips travel around 5 miles.

Riding the bus is an easy way to let someone else do the driving for you.  It can provide you a simple way to incorporate some daily exercise into your routine and gives you time to read or just relax. Clark County is served by two different transit agencies, C-TRAN and TriMet.

Telecommuting or teleworking is working at home, or at another location away from the traditional work site. Telecommuting can be an effective option every day, once a week, or on an as-needed basis.

Alternative Work Schedules

Imagine if you could have every weekend, or every other weekend, be a three-day weekend!  Alternative work schedules (also called flex schedules) are compressed work weeks that allow an employee to work longer hours in fewer days. You could work four 10-hour days each week with one day off, or work 80 hours in 9 days with an extra day off every other week.

Car pooling

Carpooling can be a flexible and convenient alternative to driving alone.  Finding a carpool partner can be easy.  Carpools can vary based on the participant’s preference. It just depends on how you set things up. It may be as simple as talking to your co-workers to see who might live near you and may be interested in setting up a carpool.

C-TRAN offers a Commuter Vanpool service for those commuters who do not have an option of using the bus system to commute to and from work.  Anyone whose commute starts, stops, or passes through Clark County is eligible for the program.  A vanpool is a prearranged group of 5 to 13 people who share a ride to and from work on a regular schedule.

Car Sharing / Zipcar

Car sharing has become an increasingly popular way to have convenient access to a car without the hassles and expense of owning one.  Car sharing is when an agency or company provides a group of cars that are available for use to its members. The cars are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
